Light Denim Vest (AKA Waistcoat) Styled 11 Ways for Spring/Summer
I adore denim and when I saw that the denim vest this season was redesigned as a trending waistcoat, I had to have it!
As someone who loves styling denim jackets, a button-front denim vest is a perfect wardrobe piece to layer over other items like a t-shirt (unbuttoned or done up) or on its own.
Below are easy ways I am styling my light denim vest this spring and summer, which you can copy, too!

For reference, this light-colored fitted denim vest is from GAP and worn in a size S. It is currently sold out, but I’ve linked to similar favorites within each section and at the bottom of the post.
With Casual Pants & Trousers
A great way to style a structured denim vest for the classic or natural/relaxed style personality is with a fab pair of olive green pants and a neutral tee.
I chose earthy tones and matched the theme of the outfit with detailed raffia slides and a practical black tote.
Black pants are a staple in my closet and currently in a wide or straight leg fit. A must-have in a classic capsule wardrobe!
To complete the look, I added a classic white/black stripe tee and a pair of retro sneakers. Classic white sneakers or black loafers (for a business casual look) would have worked just as well!
If Gen Z can wear boxers outdoors, we can wear PJ pants too, especially if your style personality is colorful and quirky!
I completed this denim vest outfit with a pair of trending casual gingham pants, coral ballerina flats, a leopard tote and statement vintage sunglasses.
With Blue Jeans & Denim
Double denim outfits are all the rage right now and a denim waistcoat style vest is a great addition to any all denim look.
You can pair your denim vest with a matching pair of jeans, denim skirt or shorts. Or have fun with contrasting denim and layering.
With Contrast color Jeans
Denim on denim, but make it contrasting! For the quirky style personality, wear a denim vest with jeans, but make it fun and colorful. I chose a hot pink pair with a colorful patterned bag and neutral sneakers.
For a more classic look, pair your denim vest with neutral off-white jeans, and blazer, and black accessories for an easy work outfit.
Over A Dress Or Jumpsuit
Denim vests make great layering items over dresses and jumpsuits. Try them over a slip dress with sneakers to make them more casual. You can even substitute the dress for a slip skirt and wear the vest as a top.
I made my slip dress outfit quirky with green platform sneakers and a leopard tote. But you can opt for white sneaker and a classic bag for a tamer look!
A denim vest over a black jumpsuit, along with a structured purse and classic loafers, adds some contrast to an all-black office outfit.
Denim Vests With Skirts
Denim vests with skirts are a great combo! Go for double denim and wear it as a set with a matching denim skirt. Or go for a triple denim look with your vest layered over a contrasting denim shirt.
Need something less structured and breezy? This summer, a tiered maxi skirt is where it’s at! A white one would be perfectly on-trend here for a neutral outfit.
However, I prefer my breezy skirts with some color, so I opted for a beige/yellow skirt.
