5 Easy Ways to Style Double Denim Outfits This Spring/Summer
Double denim outfits aka the Canadian Tuxedo have been a staple styling choice for years. And I wear it a lot!
But with blue denim on denim being as trendy as it is now, there are so many more ways of wearing all (or almost all!) denim looks right now. And not just with classic denim blouses and matching jeans.
If you’re looking for simple ways to mix & match your denim outfits and get some accessorizing ideas to elevate your look, this post is for you!
5 EAsy Ways to Style Double Denim Looks
As a stylist with over 20 years in the fashion industry, here are 5 easy styling solutions for double denim looks so you can tread the concrete runway in style!
I’ve snuck some chambray shirts into the looks for the purposes of double ‘denim’, even though ‘chambray’ is technically not denim–but it works here 😉
1. Match Your Denim Pieces to Make a Set
Matching sets are all the rage this season, so why not match your denim to create one with denim?
I love the trendy pairing of my light denim vest with a matching long denim skirt or straight leg jeans, especially for summer.
These are 3 ways I like to style denim on denim sets:
- Dark denim on dark denim
- Light denim on light denim
- Patchwork denim on similar patchwork denim
- Matching your patchwork top with a similar denim bottom, or vice-versa
2. MIsMatch Your Denim for a contrasting Set
Although I love creating matching co-ords with my denim, mismatching blue denim hues can be just as fun.
I prefer a stark contrast vs a lighter one between denim material tops and bottoms, so it looks more purposeful.
3. Break up your Denim Outfits with Other Clothes
If you want to wear double denim, but don’t want a full denim outfit, you layer in other clothing.
For instance, a tee under a denim vest or a sweater or blouse under denim outerwear pieces can work well. This is a great way to wear blue denim pieces that don’t match, nor have lots of contrast.
I like adding neutral clothing pieces to break up the denim items with a white, black or black/white striped tops and sweaters. That’s because these shades look best on me.
But you can just as easily grab a tan, beige or brown layering item. And yes, colors can also work, but that’s getting more into less ‘easy’ styling with denim!
4. Accessorize with Neutral Shoes & Accessories
Once you’ve chosen if you want to contrast or match your double denim outfit, it’s time to accessorize. The easiest way? With neutral accessory color for your shoes/purse/belt.
This includes black, tan, white, beige, or even metallics like gold.–yes, I consider it a neutral!
Below are ways I like to mix in neutral-toned accessories with double denim:
- Accessorizing light denim with white, silver, beige, or white accessories
- Adding black accessories to darker denim sets
- Mixing and matching neutrals for shoes and accessories (like a black purse and white shoes)
- Wearing two-tone neutral accessories (ex: black/white stripe purse with black/white shoes)
- Wearing 1 two-toned accessory and matching the rest with 1 of the shades (ex: a black/white stripe purse with a black shoe and belt)
If you’re not a styling pro, pick the same neutral colors for all your accessories, as it will tie the whole look together effortlessly.
5. HAve Fun with Colorful Shoes & Accessories
If you want to be more adventurous with your denim outfit, you can add some color with accessories. Here are 3 ways I like to do that:
- Pick 1 color and coordinate all of your accessories
- Try a colorful printed item and match the other pieces to one of the colors or neutrals in it
- Mismatch accessory colors for a more eclectic look
