Styling a Colorful Floral Midi Skirt 12 Ways for Spring & Transitional Months
Spring brings with it color, and what better way to celebrate our blooming surroundings with a bright print floral midi skirt! However, most of these floral skirt outfits also work to transition into Fall.
Now you might think to only wear a floral midi with more casual outfits, or tame it down with simple shades, but these styling limits can be squashed.
In fact, the more colors your skirt has in the mix, the easier it is to style with different colors and styles.
How to Wear A Colorful Floral Skirt Outfits 9 Ways
I love this particular slip skirt because it has a black base, pops of white, and many other contrasting colors. It also happens to pair well with many items in my closet.
An the best part is this multi-purpose skirt only cost me $19 Canadian.

1. Florals + Color Blocking
Of course, I love pairing color with color and what better way to play around with some colorblocking.
Honestly, I could have styled so many more tops and accessories with this skirt, but an article has it’s length limits!!
What makes all these pairings look rather effortless is the way the colors combine well with the print hues in the skirt.
For this outfit, I leaned into off white/beige as a base. The off white tank blends well with the top of the cardigan, and ties in well with my beige/off-white sneakers.
The multi-color cardigan works because of the 3 colors that match the pink and blue in the skirt perfectly.
I added a reddish orange purse, which brings out the colors in the sweater and skirt. This keeps the outfit colorful but doesn’t make the purse stick out like a sore thumb!
Another easy way to color block with a multi-colored skirt is to match a top and shoe to a color in your skirt. Here, I chose green pumps and a baby blue sweater.
These work well together because both green and blue are cooler tones. They really bring out the warm reds and pinks in the skirt.
Although not clearly seen in the photo, my purse is navy blue, which doesn’t distract from the already busy outfit at hand.
This outfit used warmer tones (pink and red) to bring out the cooler hues in the skirt. And it also brings in shoes that actually match both the elements (flowers) and colors of the skirt, which is why this also works.
This is a cute and slightly quirky look for a date or spring party.
I’ve linked to a very similar pair of Irregular Choice sandals, but you can also take a closer look at the ones I’m wearing in this floral shoes outfit post on my shoe blog.
They’re worth a peek, as they’re incredibly detailed and have little hula girls on the heels!
In this more casual look, I tie in warm (and skirt-matching!) colors at the top, while choosing a neutral black purse to complement both the black/white sneakers and black/white in the skirt. This is one of my favorite floral skirt outfits in this post!
2. Black on Florals
Want to let your colorful skirt shine? Black is the way to go. Now, it works with this skirt because it has a primarily black base (even though lots of florals semi-mask the base).
These 3 looks are similar, just that I wore different blacks on top but tied in the look with black shoes and a handbag.
Wearing a black/white striped tee under the black blazer can distract a little from the skirt. If stripes are too much, you could also soften the all-black top portion of the outfit with a light pink tank, as in the outfits above.
With any of these black on floral looks, I could easily swap out the black handbag or shoes for a color that matched the skirt.
3. Denim on Florals
Denim is a neutral and pairs well with multi-colored floral prints that don’t have blue. Of course, this one does have light and medium blues.
It makes the floral midi skirt look more casual and laid back. Of course, sneakers make it even easier to wear everyday errants as well.
Of course, one could argue that this is just another form of colorblocking and it is. But denim deserves it’s own category–I don’t make the rules!!
There might not be any grey inside this skirt, but it works! That’s because the grey t-shirt and sneakers balance each other out, while white pops in the sneaker bring out the white flowers in the skirt.
And not unlike denim, grey tends to be a neutral that usually plays well with various prints and colors.
Here’s an example of a dark blue denim piece that still works with a skirt where no navy or dark blue is to be found. Denim is a magic neutral, especially in a natural indigo hue!
I balanced out the green sneakers with the green crossbody bag and added a pop of pink because, why not?
4. Floral Print with Stripes
I adore mixing prints, especially ones that are so contrasting. Like a very organic floral print with a sturdy stripe!
The easiest way of doing this if you’re a beginner is to pair a striped top that has the same colors in the skirt. Make sure the stripes are bold enough to compete with the skirt. For instant, a very fine stripe would be drowned out by this bold printed skirt.
Keeping it simple here with a white base tee and black stripes-same as the sneakers! Easy choice of a black purse here too.
I did try this outfit with a black base tee with a white stripe. However, it didn’t look quite right, even with the same black/white Golden Goose sneakers I’m wearing in the floral skirt + red jacket outfit a few images above.
A reminder that we don’t always get it right the first time. Playing around with styling is key (as is having fun with it)!
The orangey hue in the skirt might be subtle, but it’s there! That’s why I choose this fun monochromatic short-sleeved striped sweater.
The purse, socks, and sneakers are mostly black toned. I had fun with my favorite high top platform Vans!
This whole pairing is a little over-the-top and perfect for a quirky, creative personality. It’s bold and requires a certain personality to pull off in the wild!
Especially with the loud cobalt blue that literally screams out of the outfit since it’s the only color like it in the outfit. I almost didn’t include this floral skirt outfit in the mix, but the more I look at it, the more I love it!
I think tan/camel in the sneaker’s gum sole, skirt flowers and leopard base in the bag subtly ties all the outfit’s elements together. Well, aside from the loud cookie monster blue, but a reason why I love this outfit!
Floral Skirt Styling Recap
Still unsure how to pair your long or midi length floral length outfit? No worries, here are the major takeaways:
- If choosing colorful top or shoes, have them match colors in the skirt. Then pick the same colored accessories to tie it all together.
- When mixing stripes with florals, also pick an item with same or very similar colors to the other pattern. Make sure the stripes or pattern can compete visually with the florals, so it doesn’t get overwhelmed.
- Denim, no matter the shade, will look incredible with virtually all floral prints. If unsure, pick a denim hue that matches a color in the skirt.
- If you want to make your floral skirt easier to style for work or a business casual setting, go with black. This is easy to do when black is a base or major color in the skirt. Pick all-black accessories or choose one that matches a hue in the floral print.
